September 27, 2010 With governments formulating policies of austerity as the global economic crisis recedes, a new animated video short describes the thinking behind such policies as inherently flawed. Austerity features Faculty Fellow Mark Blyth, an international political economist whose views are captured by director Joe Posner ‘07.

Austerity is the first in a new media series being produced at the Watson Institute.

“In keeping with the Institute’s mission of producing research that addresses global problems, we want to make sure that we disseminate our findings in ways that can be well understood by people outside academic life,” according to Institute Deputy Director Geoffrey S. Kirkman ‘91. “We have launched this new series seeking to translate our faculty's ideas in media-friendly ways. “

The basic idea is to pair Institute faculty with young media makers, letting them use the power of audio, video, and graphics to capture the crux of the arguments faculty are making.

“By bringing creative talent together with great academic work we think we can more effectively get our ideas out into mainstream public discourse,” Kirkman said. “We were pleased to harness the creativity of Brown University graduate and filmmaker Joe Posner.”

Blyth is writing a book, tentatively titled "Austerity: The History of a Dangerous Idea," investigating the return to prominence of the idea of a financial orthodoxy following the global financial crisis. The book is forthcoming from Oxford University Press.

I've always been a fan of alternative energy solutions, and the whole french fries to fuel model is one that has always made a ton of sense to me. Another great night with great people. I was having a hell of a time getting my flash to work the way i wanted to all night in such a large space. I was frustrated, So much so that i ended up bagging the camera up and just hanging out for a large portion of the evening, going home to sulk the next day and read up some more of my speedlight manual. I think i got a few good shots off though. Better luck next time.

It's not too often that you get to work a 12 hour day, and then pack up to head to a late night party and take more photos until 3am, but when you get the chance you have to take it.

Such an amazing time, and an amazing group of people. I feel lucky to have been a part of such a fun evening and i only hope that these photos do it justice.

I set up an makeshift photo studio in the back of the room, behind the bar. It was hot as blazes in the venue, but i had managed to purchase a set of Diva light 200s a few week prior and set those up. The kinos managed to keep the heat from getting much worse, and way into the night a kind hearted man found me a fan to use, which just added more fun to some of the photos.

People were great, and only once did someone fall into the backdrop. I shot video with the canon 5dm2 of people posing, and plan to put together a slow motion portrait reel in the next week as soon as i get some more downtime.

All in all it was a great event. I only wish i was able to do this more often, and actually make a living off of it.

This will probably be the first of many product reviews that i'm going to start posting. As a videographer and photographer in NYC, i'm always looking for the best pieces of kit to keep me fast, light on my feet, and most importantly; not spending all of my money on gear.
First of all, I have to give major props to Philip Bloom, Tom Guilmette whose blogs about shooting professional video have elevated my game exponentially. A few years ago i was really having trouble getting over a certain hump with my work. I felt that i had plateaued creatively and skill wise, and was just not finding the info i needed to kick it into gear again.
I was introduced to the Sony EX1 and Canon 5dm2 cameras through these blogs, as well as a host of other great gear, tips, and information for the growing creative. Still, a lot of the gear out there is way outside of my price range. Or at least, outside of the price range that i'm comfortable spending on low budget clients. As my skills have improved, so have my day rates, and i feel, so has my work.
Some of the great products from RedRock, Letus, and Zacuto have been added to my kit, as well as a monitor from Marshall Monitors, and a slider from Kesslercranes Now here is where i think i may stray away from a lot of the other reviews and product recommendation sites. I'm not a brand name kind of guy. Or at least, i try not to be. My first inclination is to see if there is a more economical version of what's being used and discussed out there, before jumping in and just buying whatever the piece of gear is that is most popular.
At times, this works out very poorly. Not all gear is created equal, and i've had my share of bad purchases (save your receipts) that have put me no closer to what i needed than i was when i had started.
Other times, it works out amazingly well.
The bushhawk 320D prokit Shoulder mount is one of those times. I've been eyeballing kits from Redrock, that just haven't materialized, and those from Zacuto, that im my opinion are way WAY overpriced for some rods and plastic. This is what lead me to the Bushhawk line.
Priced and marketed more for still wildlife shooters than DSLR documentary shooters, This kit looks like something you would find at Cabellas or Gander Mountain Sports instead of a camera shop.

I was able to find it at Adorama, and apparently Amazon.com has them in stock as well.
I bought mine direct from Bushhawk, and after some confusion over a wrong credit card, received my order four days after i placed it via UPS.
This shoulder mount is simple, light and customizable. The shoulder pad is comfortable without being too bulky, the forward handle is adjustable to the point where i was able to rotate it sideways in order to mount a monitor. The whole thing collapses down into a tiny bag about the size of a small laptop bag.

I just unboxed this thing today and plan to use it in the field durring a string of weddings i have to shoot this month.

I seem to always have a lot of irons in the fire, shooting photos, doing PSA's for non profits, catching up on my netflix cue...but lately my bread and butter job has been taking me to some interesting places.
I'll admit, when i took the job at Heatingoil.com, i was a little hesitant. Mostly because the majority of the last 10 years of my life has been spent railing on the status quo, deriding fossil fuels, hyping the use of mass transit and bicycles and generally trying my best not to be a sell out.
I'm realizing though that things aren't so black and white, and even working as THE video production department at a heating oil company website I'm finding ways to spread the word about renewable energy.
In the next two weeks i'm going to have the chance to speak to two of the largest suppliers of biofuel in the region. I'm excited about this because it gives me the opportunity to see how the system works from soup to nuts, and i get to make it look pretty with my 5dm2.

Outrageous Video Interviewing Opponents of the new Health Care Bill

I've been unable to afford health care since i left school three years ago. This isn't because i don't work, but because the cost of health care for the self employed is prohibitively expensive for someone who makes as much as i do.
I'm not at the poverty level, so im not eligible for public aid, and i'm not a member of any organizations that would allow me to get group coverage. In order to get meaningful coverage that would handle day to day ailments, preventative care, and checkups, i would have to pay upwards of $400 or more a month with steep deductibles, not to mention high cost for prescriptions and extras like xrays, cat scans, etc.
After recently getting an acute ear infection that almost put me in the hospital, i found myself having to call around the city to find a low cost "clinic" that could help diagnose my problem and prescribe medicine. After a long search (while dealing with sharp stabbing pains in my skull) i found one, but had to pay almost $300 after the doctors visit and perception costs. My ear still isn't fixed. I can't afford to go back yet, and have to deal with a lack of hearing in one ear still and vertigo that comes and goes.
The fact that there are no affordable options for someone in my situation is unacceptable. If I were to go into an emergency room, i would not only be burdening an already strained system, but passing on the cost of my care to other tax payers. If i were to pay the full amount for health insurance as it is now, i would be unable to pay my other bills.
Any improvement in health care is worth a shot, and many of those most vocally apposed to heath care reform, have no concept of how hard it really is to take care of yourself while uninsured. Before you shout about government taking over, think about how well the corporations in this country have taken care of the majority of Americans while they are in charge, and ask those around you how well they are taken care of by their health coverage, or lack there of.
Change is not a bad thing people.

As part of the HeatingOil.com Profiles series, i took a trip to New Hyde Park LI in New York to visit Ray Hart or Hart Petroleum. Hart is pioneering some interesting alternatives to typical fossil fuel based heating oil.
Biofuel is the the future for Hart, and the future is here. Taking product from such leftovers as animal fat, tallows, and other animal bi-products that are typically thrown out, Hart is able to provide high grade, low pollution biofuel for home heating. This is a great alternative to other feedstocks such as soybeans or corn that cut into resources that should be going toward food instead of fuel.

While covering the Tour De Queens a couple years ago, i was riding my mountain bike, with a lipstick camera attached to the frame, plugged into a camera in my backpack. as i came up to the side walk, i tried to jump the curb, forgetting that i had a camera cable attaching me to the bike. For some reason, i didn't think to put slack in the line so i could actually maneuver around. This is the result...wait for it.
Like a good camera man though, my first concern was for the camera and if i got the shot.

Bright Bike, Light Lane = Awesome

I recently bit the bullet and bought a bright Bike kit for my bike.

I learned through the process of trying to apply lots of sticky vinyl tape to my bike without leaving bubbles of air and wrinkles throughout, that i'm not as crafty as i once believed. I now have a bike, that lights up and night when a headlight flashes on it, and looks like a wrinkly taped up delivery bike during the day. Maybe not a bad thing, safety and security. I maybe should have held out for this new piece of tech, a laser bike lane. Freaking sweet. I can't wait until this becomes available.
