Second Skin Review
First off, i have to say congratulations to Juan Carlos on putting together a great documentary. For those not familiar with the world of MMORPGs, this is a great peek into the lifestyle of a few gamers.
The film does a good job of tapping into the human side of this story without necessarily taking a side one way or the other. Second Skin follows the lives of several people who play MMORPGs and shows how the game has affected their lives. Heartwarming at parts, funny in others, and down right sad in still more, the film allows the viewer to see that these "gamers" are just normal people trying to find a place in life.
While in some parts the film seemed to drag, and bordered on redundancy, overall it was a pleasure to watch. A few of the story-lines seemed disconnected and in need of some tighter editing, but the camera work and editing overall was wonderful.
I would have liked to have seen more about to consumerist aspect of these games, and possible more on how much these games are based on real world social models of capitalism and consumer culture. I think there is a whole part of the story that is getting lost here in favor of the human element, but really it may not fit in a movie like this anyway. I can understand why they made the choices they did.
I encourage everyone to go check out this film.
